Newlands Junior College

Newlands Junior College delivered a new form of education by providing alternative curricular programmes aimed at young persons who may be at risk of disengaging from their current secondary school education but still have the potential to become successful apprentices, useful employees and good citizens. The five year pilot programme was created as research has shown that up to 25% of S4 school leavers are failed each year by traditional schooling.

Each year, the college aimed to recruit 30 pupils from local schools and put them through an alternative approach to their education in years S3 and S4 which, in addition to academic subjects, will combine vocational training and motivational training with sports, nutrition and outdoor activities.

Our Contribution

Jim McColl and Clyde Blowers Capital made significant contributions towards the creation and general running of the alternative junior college during the five year pilot programme. Since its creation in 2014, a total of 101 students were admitted to Newlands Junior College with an incredible 92.1% of the students achieving a positive outcome (moving into employment or further education) after graduating.
